There are a few things in life that we can be sure of…one of them is death. Death isn’t subject to time or place or frequency. We just know it will come. I’m pretty sure you will find no person that would argue this point. Moreover death comes to everyone; the rich, the poor, the tall, the short, black, white, brown, the nuns and the gangsters.
Good people die just like bad people die. We will all face death. We face it directly and indirectly. The real question is when that time comes will you be ready? I will touch this point last. I would like to share a couple things that we should understand about death first.
1) God is sovereign: He can do what He wants, when He wants, how He wants, to whom He wants because there is none higher than Him and He knows what is best for all of us.
2) God did not create us to die. He created us to live but Adam’s sin brought death and suffering to all of us. What God created was “very good” (Genesis 1:31) remember? Then came sin. (Roman 5:12)
3) God does not want us to die in sin. God speaks to us through Peter in 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” We also know this through God’s word, (Hebrews 9:27) “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
It is clear that death comes to all of us, it is clear that when death comes it is followed by judgment. There is nothing in between. Our eternal choice is made before we leave this life. There isn’t a “rethinking” after death, just judgment.
That is why Jesus came into THIS world to open a door to life. THIS world is the world cursed and condemned with sin. WE are all sinners thanks to Adam. God speaks through the apostle John,
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Here is the great truth (vs. 17) Jesus came here because we are already condemned, not because we needed condemning. (vs. 18) but we can escape condemnation through him.
Adam brought sin and death, Jesus brought righteousness and life.
Nuns and gangsters will all face death. It is not about how good you are in this life. It is about recognizing our condemnation and the one way we have out of that condemnation.
So my question to both the nuns and the gangsters is the same…are you prepared for the inevitable?
